ICS Organizes Eastside Community Schools Convening

The Eastside Community Schools Convening — hosted by InnerCity Struggle (ICS) — will take place Thursday, Aug. 27 at Mendez High School, 1200 Plaza del Sol, Los Angeles, 90033 from 8:30 am – noon.

The event will bring together key allies and stakeholders, as well as organizational and community leaders to discuss the importance of community schools.

ICS has developed an Eastside Community Schools framework, which aligns the efforts and resources of school leaders, public agencies and community partners to create safe, healthy and supportive schools. A community schools model integrates data driven strategies and approaches to wellness, equitable funding resources, career and college readiness and a positive school climate.

John Rogers, PhD, director of UCLA’s Institute for Democracy, Education and Access and faculty co-director of the UCLA Principal Leadership Institute, will serve as the keynote speaker. Rogers is nationally-recognized for his leadership in improving public schools using public engagement and community organizing as strategies for equity.

The convening will also feature a panel discussion with leaders from Promesa Boyle Heights, St. John’s Well Child and Family Center, SEIU Local 99, and Roosevelt High School.

Breakfast, childcare and English/Spanish translation will be provided. Street parking is available.

RSVP to Laura Zavala by Thurs., Aug. 20: [email protected], or 323-780-7605 x106.
